How to diagnose a Gemini 429 error

Resolve Gemini API 429 errors by distinguishing temporary request limits from daily quotas, using bounded retries and checking project-level usage.

The short answer

429 is an HTTP error, not a Gemini model version. Inspect the error body: a temporary request limit and an exhausted daily quota require different responses. Official guidance checked October 8, 2026 (Beijing time).

Start with the specific error

Google's Interactions API documents rate_limit_exceeded and too_many_requests for short-term limits, and quota_exceeded for daily quota. Its current documentation uses 402 payment_required for depleted prepaid credits; do not assume every 429 is a billing problem.

Choose a bounded recovery

For transient limits, Google's guidance recommends exponential backoff with random jitter and a maximum retry count. For an exhausted daily quota, wait for the reset or request an increase.

  • Reduce concurrent requests instead of immediately replaying the entire queue.
  • Inspect requests, input tokens and daily usage for the affected project and model.
  • Preserve the error code, timestamp and request context for debugging; keep API keys out of logs.

Check the right quota boundary

Gemini limits apply per project, not per API key. Daily request quotas reset at midnight Pacific time. Active limits depend on the model and account tier, so check AI Studio rather than copying a fixed number from another account.

Common questions

Will a new API key fix project rate limits?

Not for another key in the same project: the documented quota boundary is the project.

Should I retry forever?

No. Set a retry limit and surface a clear failure. Repeated short retries will not restore an exhausted daily quota.
